A professional headshot is something that can attract the right customers, the right employers, and can set you apart from the competition in a noisy marketplace. (No...that selfie you shot on New Year's Eve won't work for your business card!)
Top performers typically update their business headshots every two years. So how can you look your best when it's time for your session?
1. Wear clothing that fits you well and that you are comfortable in. If you love the way a shirt or jacket looks, but it is baggy on you, a few dollars and a short trip to an alteration shop will make that outfit look like it was made just for you.
There is a tendency for people who are heavier than they want to be to wear baggy or loose-fitting clothing, feeling that it covers up the excess weight. Not true. It just looks sloppy.
Some guys (usually high school seniors) want to show off their bulging biceps by wearing a shirt that looks like it came from Baby Gap. Clothing that fits too tight is rarely appropriate for most situations.
2. Wear solid colored clothing so that it doesn't detract from your face. I love wearing patterns and do so frequently, but patterns may draw attention away from you and onto the shirt.
When in doubt, go with something that either matches or compliments your eye color or hair. That will always help you look stunning.
3. Muted tones are preferable to bright and flashy tones. You don't want to look like you just stepped off the set of Miami Vice. Remember, we want to keep you the subject of your portrait, not your clothes. Bright colors project (especially reds, oranges, and yellows), which also makes you look larger.
4. Choose a top with sleeves at least to the elbow. Your arms take up more skin area than your face and will draw attention and it may also make your arms look larger.
5. Keep jewelry simple and minimal. We don't want to draw attention away from your face.
6. Please iron, steam, or press your shirt! I've had people who literally unpacked a dress shirt from the store packaging and thrown it on at the shoot. It is much less time consuming for you to iron a shirt than for me to fix wrinkles in Photoshop later.
7. If you are getting a haircut or new hairstyle, please don't do it the morning of your session.
8. Bring your makeup with you. We also have professional makeup services available, just let us know in advance (additional fee applies).
9. Bring a few different shirts/tops. We can easily move from formal to more casual in minutes, and you will enjoy having a variety of different headshots you can use.
